Goji Juice in Society

Saturday, May 24, 2008

You know that the goji berry has been hailed in eastern cultures for thousands of years as a source of longevity and health, but how has it been recieved over here in the western world? Our culture is traditionally much more skeptic about natural health products such as this - raised in a society that relies heavily on man-made medicines, most people are not willing to beleive that natural substances can do just as much for our bodies.

We've already covered how the scientific community itself has taken hold of goji juice and the goji berry. With record-breaking numbers of scientific studies and journals conducted on the goji berry and several clinical studies, the likes of which have never been conducted on any related product before, it's clear that the scientific world has embraced goji more than any product of its kind.

But what about our society? How has our culture responded to goji? To answer this, let's take a look around at the media, and see what it has had to say about this little red fruit.

TIME magazine is very prestigious press. The weekly magazine has participated in the change of social mindsets many times before, such as having Edith Cummings, the first woman athlete to appear on the cover of the magazine contributing greatly to women's athletic history. In July of 2006, however, TIME featured the goji berry within its pages, where it was given the title of "Superfruit of the year" and quoted as a source of "energy and longevity."

New Woman Magazine also featured the powerful little berry. The magazine stated that "The latest super fruit to take Hollywood by storm is the Himalayan Goji Berry. A-listers like Madonna, Mischa Barton and Liz Hurley can't get enough of the powerful, anti-oxidant-packed fruit," and "Mischa's immaculate complexion is a result of a daily dose of goji juice." After other positive discussion of goji and some of its capabilities, the article documented numerous top celebrities form Hollywood who were on goji juice, and who completely recommended it to anyone else. Finally, the article closes claiming that consistent consumption of goji juice helps to protect cells in the body from premature aging, improves concentration and focus, and even went so far as to claim that it reduced cellulite.

Probably the most well-known instance of goji in the media, however, would have to be its appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. On the show was Dr. Mehmet Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon, award-winning author and TIME Magazine's "44th Most Influential Scientist and Thinker 2008." During the program Dr. Oz was engaged with a basketball player who wanted to know how to improve his performance and reduce his recovery times after practice. Dr. Oz recommended goji, stating that powerful nutrition would be the greatest help to the athlete.

Though these are a few of the more memorable instances of goji being recommended, praised, and noted in mainstream media, there are literally countless others from articles in The Los Angeles Times to an appearance and recommendation on Gene Simmons: Family Jewels, a television show about the life of the famous rock star. Goji is clearly somethign very new for the people of western society, but it has undeniably been met with strong praise, scientific validation, and unprecedented popularity.
